Ozone Generators
Ozone is a powerful oxidation agent which can be used in air and water. It is oxygen with an extra molecule, 0³, and it donates its spare molecule to oxidize microorganisms in the air or water. Having done so, it reverts to oxygen, 0². It can be used in low volumes (less than 0.05 ppm) in occupied spaces but its use in volumes greater than this should be restricted to unoccupied areas. It has a half life of approximately 20 minutes, so areas where Ozone has been used to disinfect or odour remediate, can be used again very quickly.

Applications for Ozone
Washrooms - Destroys odours and sanitizes washrooms and toilets.
Washrooms and toilets frequently produce bad odours due to lack of proper and regular cleaning, poor drainage systems, insufficient or too infrequent use of flush water and poor ventilation.
It is not always practical to flush out the bad odours by using higher numbers of air changes. Artificial chemical fragrances can be used to mask the smell but this generally only makes matters worse especially in a badly overloaded facility.
Ozone has been found to be highly successful in eliminating unwanted odour in washrooms and providing the amount used is accurately controlled it is the ideal solution moreover, being a gas, ozone can reach the whole washroom. Not only will it eliminate odour but it will also help reduce the moulds and bacteria that may damage the decoration and exacerbate the odour problem.
Healthcare - Destroys odours and micro-organisms in hospitals and nursing homes.
Ozone deals effectively with problem odours in hospitals, nursing and care homes. Unpleasant odours are a common problem in establishments caring for sick and/or elderly people. They discourage visitors, damage the reputation of the establishment, lead to unnecessary stress for visitors, residents and staff and increase the cleaning costs. The causes of the offensive odours range from repeated incontinence and vomiting (making soft furnishings difficult to clean effectively) to inadequate personal hygiene and poor ventilation.
Due to energy conservation policies and the need to keep frail people warm, especially in winter, it is not usually practical to flush out the bad odours by using higher numbers of air changes. Artificial chemical fragrances can be used to mask the smell but this generally only makes matters worse especially in a badly affected facility.
Ozone has been found to be highly successful in eliminating these unwanted odours in hospitals, nursing and care homes and provided the amount used is accurately controlled it is the ideal solution. Not only will it eliminate odours but it will also help reduce the moulds and bacteria that may exacerbate the odour problem. Fixed or portable ozone generators can be employed on an ongoing or as required basis to deal with problems making rooms smell fresh and pleasant for all users.
Hydroponics - Eliminates odours, moulds, bacteria and insects in grow rooms.
All grow rooms produce bad odours because of the warmth, humidity, the presence of vegetation and lack of air circulation. Because of the need to maintain temperature it is not practical to flush out the bad odours by increasing the numbers of air changes. The use of artificial chemical fragrances to mask the smell generally only makes matters worse. Ozone has been found to be highly successful in eliminating unwanted odour in rooms and provided the amount used is accurately controlled it is the ideal solution. Not only will it eliminate odour but it will also help reduce moulds and bacteria that may damage the plants. It has even been found to discourage insect infestations.
- Odour Control inside the Grow Room
Effective odour control can be achieved in the grow room using any of the Airmaid 2300 range ozone generators or an ES215. The choice depends on the size of the room and the number of air changes. These are simple compact units that are easy to install and require very little power or maintenance.
- Extract Duct Odour Control
If the grow room has an exhaust ventilation duct installed then the best way of eliminating odour emissions is to inject ozone into the duct using one of the ES range (ES215, ES550) of ozone generators which are much more energy efficient and reliable than in-duct devices which are difficult to maintain and expensive to run. The ozone is injected into the duct via a small bore plastic tube thereby avoiding major ductwork modifications and protecting the ozone generator from the harmful conditions to be found within the duct and ensuring that high performance and reliability are maintained.
- Odour Control Outside the Grow Room
Outside the grow room, odour can also become a problem in the rest of the building and this is best solved using one of the Airmaid 2300 range (AM2304, AM2324) of ozone generators. All the units in this range have a fully adjustable output and are suitable for a fixed installation or portable use providing effective elimination of grow room, smoke and cooking odours.
Hotels & Catering - Destroys cigarette and other odours in all types of room.
Ozone deals effectively with problem odours in hotels, restaurants and bars. Unpleasant odours in hotel rooms resulting from smoking, incontinence, vomiting, spillages, etc are a major problem and can prevent the sale of rooms and damage hard won reputations. Restaurants and bars can be similarly affected although their problems are more frequently with associated toilets and washrooms. Cooking smells finding their way out of kitchens can also prove to be a problem in all these establishments.
Due to energy conservation policies it is not always practical to flush out the bad odours by using higher numbers of air changes and the cleaning of soft furnishings impregnated with an odour generating substance can be very difficult. Artificial chemical fragrances can be used to mask the smell but these generally only makes matters worse especially in a badly affected facility.
Ozone has been found to be highly successful in eliminating the unwanted odours in rooms. An hotel room found to be unacceptable due to stale smoke or other cause can be given a short treatment using a portable ozone generator making it ready for immediate re-occupancy. Such treatments can be conducted by unskilled staff, as part of the daily routine, bringing all rooms up to a common quality standard.
Food Manufacture - Disinfection of food production halls, storage rooms and packaging.
Ozone has many major advantages over traditional methods of disinfection. There are increasing demands within the food industry for higher standards of control of the microbiological organisms found in food production and storage areas to meet consumer expectations. This coupled with the withdrawal of many of the traditional disinfectant chemicals as a result of the European Biocidal Products Directive has lead to a large increase in the use of ozone as a terminal disinfectant.
More ozone is required for disinfection than for odour control - a rough rule of thumb would be 1 ppm or about 1g per 100m3. Another reason that a greater amount of ozone is required for this type of application, is that the temperature in food production areas tends to be lower, further reducing the effectiveness of ozone. For these reasons, you may require a bigger unit than would normally be required to odour control a similar sized area.
One more factor to be borne in mind in food production areas is the location of the unit. Roof voids are ideal for one simiple reason - water. This type of area tends to get hosed down quite vigorously and water and ozone generators are not happy bedfellows!
Ozone has the following advantages:-
- Highly effective against common bacteria such as E. Coli and Listeria.
- Highly effective against moulds and yeasts.
- Regular use improves quality and reduces wastage increasing profitability.
- It is fully automatic and requires no extra labour to use.
- There are no daily consumables required.
- Process can be used daily to maximise disinfection.
- Being gaseous it reaches all parts of the room being disinfected.
- It is just as effective underneath and on the sides of a surface as on the top.
- It decays into natural oxygen after the disinfection process leaving no toxic residues.
- Product does not need to be removed from the room.
- Does not damage food machinery.
- The use of ozone is not affected by the Biocidal Products Directive.
- Ozone can be used continuously with the right controls .
- Ozone can be used in packaging.
- No toxic effluent considerations.
Nuisance Odour Control - Eliminates nuisance odours from industrial processes.
Ozone has many major advantages over other methods of odour control. Increasing pressure from Environmental Health officers and local residents is forcing manufacturers that utilise processes emitting odours to take steps to contain them within their plant boundaries. Although there are many possible solutions most are expensive or take up a large amount of space. Ozone on the other hand is relatively inexpensive and can frequently be installed with a minimum amount of plant alteration. As a result, it is becoming the solution of choice in many industries, especially those in the food industry such as abattoirs and ready meal production where ozone is often already in use as a disinfectant.
Ozone has the following advantages:-
- It is fully automatic and requires no extra labour to use.
- There are no daily consumables required.
- Process can frequently utilise existing exhaust ducting.
- It is compact and takes up little space.
- It can turned on and off very quickly.
- It is easy and quick to install.
- It is relatively inexpensive when compared with other methods.
- It has low running costs.
- Several dispersed exhaust systems can be supplied from a central plant.
- No toxic effluent considerations.
Fire & Flood Remediation - Eliminates odours and prevents moulds after fire and flood damage.
Ozone deals effectively with problem odours resulting from fire and flood damage. The unpleasant odours in rooms and buildings resulting from fire or flood damage are substantial and lingering. Even when the building has been completely dried out, the unpleasant musty smells of water damage still pervade the atmosphere as do the residues of a fire where usually huge quantities of water are pumped into a building.
While flushing out the smells with fresh air does work it takes a very long time. Ozone has been found to be highly effective at removing these smells quickly making the building habitable in a much shorter time than would otherwise be the case.
After the drying process has been completed it is simply a case of placing a portable ozone generator in the room and leaving it to run. The ozone oxidises the odour molecules leaving the room smelling fresh and odour free
